About balance, chemistry and diversity

March is here! Yay! And March brings many beautiful things: The start of Spring, International Earth Day, International Women’s Day!

As part of all this and specially, International Women’s Day, I decided to write another post based on an analogy!. Remember January’s post: About singularities, love and experts? Well, this month it is: About balance, chemistry, and diversity.

Let’s start with Balance! According to Google, balance is a noun:

An even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.

A situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

and a verb:

Put (something) in a steady position so that it does not fall.

Many great philosophers and thinkers thought of balance as the Golden Middle Way. I believe achieving balance in life is hard, but I think it it one of the end goals and one that is worth pursuing each day.

Although, balance is hard in life and other aspects (ehm, Software Engineering, ehm…) and there is not a single recipe to reach it, balance can be achieved through scientific (repeatable) methods in Chemistry.

According to Study.com:

A chemical equation needs to be balanced so that it follows the law of conservation of mass. A balanced chemical equation occurs when the number of the different atoms of elements in the reactants side is equal to that of the products side.

I am also constantly amazed by the balance that exists in the Universe, in the energy that surrounds us, in the perfect place that everything has.

Okay, okay, how does this relate to diversity? Let me start with a quote by Susan Cain, author of the book Quiet:

We know from myths and fairy tales that there are many different kinds of powers in this world. One child is given a light saber, another a wizard’s education. The trick is not to amass all the different kinds of power, but to use well the kind you’ve been granted.

To achieve balance in our companies, in our organizations, in the world, we need diversity. We need all different kinds of powers! Every single person that exists, has existed and will exist is different. Each one of us has different strengths, abilities, talents and weaknesses. And when we get together, communicate and share, we can make better decisions and achieve greater things. That is where the magic the Golden middle way is.

Have a great month of March, may the Force be with you to accomplish all your goals! And above all, remember to open your heart to what the Universe is trying to tell you and have fun!
